Dassanayaka House

DESCRIPTION OF SITE AND CONCEPT

The total width of the land abutting the road is only 21 ft. and across the road is a railway line. The immediate rear boundary a 25’high retaining wall with a temple on top, a very tight and challenging site. Given the width the of land no natural light and ventilation could be obtained from the side boundaries and accordingly a central courtyard provided adequate light to the center of the house. The courtyard is complemented by the staircase and the bedrooms are on the two far ends. A large glass cover on top of the courtyard allowed for the space below to be used at the dining space.
